  1. Grew up in this neighborhood just 4 blocks north. Delivered papers to some of the businesses on So.Grand. There used to be a soda fountain in this building in the late 50′s and early 60′s I was 2 years-old when this photo was taken.

  2. Blalock’s was one of the neatest stores. You could find so many things in there. Next door was Madison Furniture, which carried high quality furniture. In the 1970s cable TV had come to Springfield and the office for cable was a few buildings down on this same side of the street.

  3. My parents owned the So. Town Grill Restaurant and I spent many hours at Blalock’s, admiring all the cosmetics and sitting on the floor in the back, reading The Bobsey Twins books.

  4. I remember Blalocks. I loved that store. They had porcelain horse figurines and Whitman books that I loved. Also Steak n’ Shake at the corner of 7th & South Grand as well as the A&P. And Bressmer’s and Myers Brothers & Herndons(?). Springfield’s downtown was special in those days, and the bus service was great. I remember The Platter Shop somewhere downtown. And the Orpheum theater. I understand the downtown area is a ghost of what it once was. We moved to California in Sept 1962. I went to Stuart School from kindergarten through 6th grade (60-61) then 7th grade at Franklin Jr High. We moved at the start of 8th grade.

  5. I have a question.About 2 blocks to the left of this picture was a hardware store on the corner. It was run by 2 sisters. When you went in nothing was very neat but you ask one of the sisters if they had it & within 5 min they would produce it if they had it.This had to be before 58 Thanks

  6. Are you thinking of Lauterbach’s (spelling may not be correct). I remember that was a gray building and in the late 40′s they had a parrot in the store. I never could get it to talk to me. Herter’s Drugstore was near there but on the other side of the street.
