When exactly did B & Z bakery close? Mr and Mrs Figge owned and worked the bakery. Their oldest daughter Diane was my best friend -- we went to Blessed Sacrament School together. She had a younger sister Karen and a brother whose name was Paul, I think.
I agree -- theirs was the best bakery ever. Sometimes after school and on Saturdays Diane, rebecca Mason and I would goof off and play around at the bakery or else sometimes we'd go the the flower shop and play - as girls do.

I loved their Lemon Cake -- don't know how else to describe it. It was a square layered cake sugared on the bottom -- absolutely delicious!! I believe it also came in different flavors.

Would love the recipe.

I remember The Platter. I was a student at Concordia Seminary and a Disc Jockey on WFMB-FM when it first stated playing country music. I bought a whole set of "Songs of Our Times" record albums at $1.50 each. That was $42.00 plus tax -- more than a two weeks salary (working part time).

I had wanted them for years and they were long out of print, but they were re-issued and the Platter had them all.

I still have them and still listen to them (or the duplicates I bought on eBay), and when I play them I still think of Springfield and the Platter.....

Would love the recipe for b n z bakery buttercake. Use to go to classes at Spfld School of Beauty Culture and run in there for breaks. No one believes how good they were

I concur about the loss of the B & Z Bakery - still can't find a bakery that is better than their birthday cakes. Any chance someone has the recipe for their turtle cookies?

B & Z Bakery is sorely missed! The city lost a fantastic bakery when they closed

Next door on the corner of 4th and Adams was "The Platter" which was THE place to buy quality home audio equipment.
