My GUESS is that’s the east side of Fifth and the buildings to the right of the big one on the left were demolished to make way for what became Arch Wilson mens clothing store and the American Legion post and restaurant? The building on the left was a Walgreen’s Drug Store on the ground floor in the 50s at least, became home of the State Journal-Register advertising sales office and later offices of an investment firm owned by Pat Noonan. All of this, kind of across from the Roxy Theater on the west side of Fifth about that far south.
I think the little “Toddle House” diner was in this block, across the street from the Roxy Theater. Illinois Bell was in the large building, I worked there my first job. Walgreens was on the SE corner of 5th and Monroe, and Kay Jewelers was on the SW corner.
Barb, I LOVED the chocolate meringue pie at the Toddle House. We often went there after downtown shopping or a movie at the Roxie or the Lincoln. Damn fine pie!

1944? The minivan in the background makes me suspect this photo is of more recent vintage.

I believe that the big building became the AT&T office. Bldg on the right became Gail M. Wanless Realtor at 426 So. 5th St.

I believe that the small building (current photo) is one of the oldest former residences in the City.
