There was a candy kitchen in the back of that Fannie May store. You could buy wrapped caramels that were soft and buttery and still warm from the kitchen. I still buy the @#&* frozen ones when I’m in town. Bah!
My father, Basil Coutrakon, told me that his father had a candy store where Bridges Jewelers was and is. He used to take me to the back room in the late ’50′s and early ’60′s — where there had been no re modeling or building improvements for the jewelry store– and there was that beautiful octagonal porcelain and marble tile on the floor. It may still be there.
We still get Fannie May candies for Christmas! We also used to visit Pease’s when we went to Blessed Sacrament School in the early 50s. Long since moved west.
Is this the same Coutrakon family that in the 1950′s ran the candy store and cafe near the Pantheon Theatre on North Grand Avenue? They had the best caramel apples in the world.

Why not buy your caramels from Pease’s Candy. A Springfield tradition for 80 years or so.
