It was torn down & replaced with the building you see there now. There was structural issues with the upper two floors of the main church building dating back to the early 60′s, We used to play church leagus basketball in a gym on the top floor & had to stop because they installed steel beams up there to strabilize the building. It was a neat old building, with a pipe organ that would rock when only the youth were there with the choir director.
I grew up sitting in the upper balconoy of that church for Sunday Services. It was beautiful. Still have one of the pipes from the huge pipe organ. My parents got it when the dismantled the organ. Think the church auctioned the individual pipes off to members as a fundraiser.
I grew up in this church and was to be married here. I had my invitations printed and sent out when I received notice it had been condemmed. No one was allowed to go inside because of structural problems. I had to find another church but quick.
I got to play that pipe organ lots in the 50′s, when I took lessons from Frank Perkins, then minister of music with his wife Aline. They were so great, and put up with so much nonsense from us very irreverent little morons. The organ was gorgeous, but frequently needed repairs. Mr. Perkins would call me on weekends when he had a wedding to play for, to come downtown and crawl into the pipes with an armload of old towels to stuff into the pipe that was continuously “blowing.” I think I was his skinniest student and therefore the best “fit!”
what happend to that beautiful church? It was a little before my time….
